The Independent launches Europe: The Way Back – a new community to help shape Britain’s future relationship with Europe

New campaign programme to strengthen Britain’s relationship with Europe unveiled to coincide with 10-year anniversary of the Brexit referendum.

The Independent has today launched Europe: The Way Back, a new editorial campaign and digital community for readers who want a clearer, more constructive conversation about Britain’s future with Europe.

Unveiled to coincide with the 10-year anniversary of the Brexit referendum, The Way Back will bring together reporting, analysis, comment, reader debate, newsletters, polls, podcasts and video to explore what closer relations with Europe could and should look like over the coming years.

The campaign, launched in a letter to readers from Editor-in-Chief Geordie Greig, will consist of a major programme of interviews, features, opinion, serialisation, polling and multimedia journalism. Planned highlights include contributions and interviews with senior political figures from across the spectrum who have been at the heart of Britain’s Europe debate, exploring the execution of Brexit and its continuing impact on British politics.

All content will be housed within a dedicated campaign hub, and from June 10, readers who sign up to The Way Back community will receive weekly expert insights and regular briefings on the biggest developments in European politics and policy. Subscribers will also have access to exclusive analysis, opinion and debate, extracts from Anthony Seldon’s major new book, The Brexit Effect, and invitations to live events, webinars, expert Q&As and podcast recordings.

The Way Back is designed for readers who believe Britain should have a closer and deeper relationship with Europe. It will recognise the democratic outcome of the 2016 referendum while focusing on the choices facing Britain now: how to rebuild cooperation, trust, trade, mobility, security and cultural ties with European neighbours.

The campaign will also go beyond Westminster, combining major political interviews with reporting from communities impacted by Brexit, from Cornish fishing towns to former ‘Red Wall’ constituencies and post-industrial areas.

Geordie Greig, Editor-in-Chief of The Independent, said:

“Ten years on from the Brexit referendum, Britain’s relationship with Europe remains one of the defining questions facing the country. Far from settling the arguments, the past decade has been marked by discord and division, while the world around us has changed dramatically, from war on the European continent to the economic transformation promised by AI and the upheaval of the established global order.”

“We’re launching The Way Back not to call for a reversal of that decision, or to return to old arguments, but to elevate the debate on how we rebuild a closer relationship with Europe. We are providing a platform for the voices, ideas, and arguments that can help shape a more prosperous, secure and confident Britain.”

“The Way Back is the latest expression of The Independent’s campaigning DNA, bringing together our journalism, leading voices and our highly engaged readers to explore that future with honesty, curiosity and ambition. From trade, investment and security to scientific collaboration, migration and opportunities for young people, the debate about Europe is not over. It has entered a new phase.”

The Way Back is now live at independent.co.uk.
