Licensing and Syndication

Accessing our unique archive

Founded in 1986, The Independent newspaper has recorded thousands of momentous global events. From capturing the fall of the Berlin Wall to covering the Gulf War and reporting on 9/11, our award-winning journalists have been at the forefront of the news agenda for over forty years.

Our Licensing team offers the opportunity to tap into this diverse archive of journalism. Our content is licensed for a broad range of uses including digital and social platforms, film productions, news apps, corporate websites and educational publishing. We provide both historical and up-to-the-minute access through our multiple distribution channels and work hard to build close relationships with our clients based on their specific syndication needs.

Entertainment Licensing

The Independent newspaper regularly features in theatre, television and film. Whilst historical front covers can lend authenticity to a fictional scene, our news headlines – both past and present – are considered a  powerful storytelling tool by a growing portfolio of documentary makers. We’ve most recently appeared in Britain and the Blitz, American Manhunt, The Hack, Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story and Netflix’s The Crown.

Licensing our Logo

The Independent reviews hundreds of consumer products each year, providing readers with recommendations based on real-life testing by industry experts. Our reviews are unbiased and offer advice buyers can trust. Through our partner MLC, featured brands can license the IndyBest logo to maximise the benefit of their endorsement.

Licensing Quotes for Marketing Materials

Quotes and star-ratings from our impartial tech or culture reviews are often licensed by clients for inclusion in marketing and promotional material. Earned media is an impactful way to promote a product in tandem with advertising.

Features for Publishers

Our award-winning journalism can be licensed on an ad-hoc basis or subscription basis. Whether publishers are seeking high-profile interviews to supplement issues or a feed of trusted content to complement their own, our mix of international and national news and entertainment coverage means we have an impressive portfolio of articles to offer.

Photography for Commercial Use

The Independent has recently partnered with Alamy to bring to life a collection of over 70,000 exclusive images from our historic photography archives. The Independent launched in 1986 as a trailblazing broadsheet with an emphasis on quality photojournalism, often forgoing traditional front page copy in favour of striking imagery used across several columns. Its pioneering use of imagery earned several industry accolades during the 1990s, including “Black and White Newspaper of the Year” and “British Newspaper of the Year” (British Picture Editors’ Awards), as well as “Best Use of Photography” (British Newspaper Awards). Our editorial photography is often sought by publishers wishing to tell a more compelling news story.

Requests for our Archive

The Independent also licenses editorial content for commercial and academic use direct to companies and not-for-profit organisations. We partner with Gale Newsvault Programme, a service accessible to universities and libraries, and we distribute material via Ancestry.com. This can be publicly accessed via a subscription.

Purchasing Framed Photographs

Readers can purchase timeless imagery, framed and ready to hang, from The Independent’s extensive photo library from our partners at Fleet Street Finest.
