Summer is in full swing and it’s busier than ever at The Independent. In this week’s Insider, we recap our Grand Prix win at the AOP Digital Publishing Awards and the launch of The Independent’s Pride List at Queer Britain, whilst we share Independent Media’s plans for marking Refugee Week and look forward to the latest instalment of The Independent x Latitude’s Instagram Live series.
Last week saw the AOP Digital Publishing Awards take place and it came with a big win for The Independent. The publication was recognised as the Best Digital Publishing Company 2025, the top prize of the night. Long read here.
Praising the company for balancing “commercial success with impactful journalism”, judges said The Independent “continues to build its reputation as an innovative and forward-thinking digital publisher”.
We would like to thank the judges for recognising the hard work and dedication of our team and pass on our congratulations to all of this year’s nominees and winners.
The Independent launched its 2025 Pride List with a joyous and colourful celebration last week at Queer Britain in London.
Independent journalists, media, community figures and honourees from this year’s list including Dr Victoria McCloud, Peter Tatchell and Yasmin Benoit gathered to celebrate and reflect on the immense contributions of LGBT+ people to public life.
In her address, UK Editor Chloe Hubbard acknowledged the profound impact of the visibility the list brought and continues to bring, in her own life and for the community as whole, stating “Until we achieve equality, The Independent will continue as a publication to overtly platform LGBT+ people, their achievements, and the issues that affect the community.”
Queer Britain, the national LGBT+ museum, made for a poignant setting to take stock of the enormous progress made in a relatively short time, but also the continuing erosion of rights for LGBT+ people at home and abroad – especially recent, devastating setbacks to the transgender community in this country.
In a year of ongoing global turmoil, Independent Media brands are coming together to mark Refugee Week (16-22 June) and World Refugee Day (20 June) through partnerships with Refugee Week, Choose Love and War Child.
The Independent, HuffPost UK, Seasoned and BuzzFeed UK are donating advertising to Refugee Week, Choose Love and War Child. The partnerships will be accompanied by special editorial in Tasty UK and The Independent, the latter of which will include a feature from multi-award winning actress Carey Mulligan.
