Roisin O’Connor has been appointed as The Independent’s Music Editor

After joining as a freelancer in 2014, Roisin worked on various desks including pictures, news and social media before the role of Music Correspondent was created for her two years later.

Since then, she has interviewed some of the biggest names in music – from Metallica to Liam Gallagher, Lewis Capaldi, Shania Twain and 50 Cent – and written extensively about a number of pressing issues in the industry, including mental health, misogyny, the protection of grassroots venues, and the music landscape in the UK post-Brexit. She also covers major events such as the Brit Awards, Mercury Prize, Eurovision and the Grammys.

She is committed to championing new talent, demonstrated in her weekly newsletter, Now Hear This, and Music Box, the series of stripped-down sessions she created in 2017 that has hosted artists including Lewis Capaldi, Olivia Dean, Caity Baser, Nell Mescal, Yungblud, Tom Grennan, Ms Banks and Avelino. Over the years, Roisin has also helped to coordinate a number of festival partnerships with The Independent, including Montreux Jazz Festival, Black Deer and The Great Escape, and can often be heard discussing various music topics on radio and TV.

Get in touch if you think you have a story, tips or new music that Roisin should be writing about!
